Throughout pregnancy, the carrying parent feels the baby all the time. For a dad or partner, the baby can feel further away for a while. "I want to feel something too, but how?" is a question many partners ask. There isn't one way to bond, but a few small habits can make the baby feel much closer.
Your voice is a bridge
Many sources think babies begin to hear sounds from outside in the second half of pregnancy. Talking to the bump, reading or singing the same song for a few minutes each evening can become a familiar ritual for the two of you.
Go to appointments together
When you can, going to check-ups together, writing questions down together and seeing the scan together helps you feel part of the journey.
Write a letter
Write your baby a letter about how you are waiting for them: what you think about today, what you dream of. Read years later, it can mean a great deal.
Small rituals
- A "good morning" to the bump before you leave for work.
- Looking up the baby's size together each weekend.
- Being called over to feel a kick, hand on the bump.
