The hospital bag is on many parents' minds towards the end of pregnancy. "What if I forget something?" is a very common worry. Splitting the bag into a few small steps makes it easier, and it can even become a lovely part of getting ready.
Ask your hospital first
What you need varies between hospitals. Some provide nappies, baby clothes or maternity pads. Asking your birth hospital what they provide keeps the bag from getting overfull.
Think of three small bags
- For you: a front-opening nightdress or pyjamas, comfortable underwear, slippers, a charging cable, lip balm, your ID and health documents.
- For the baby: a few bodysuits for the season, a hat, a blanket and a going-home outfit.
- For your partner: a change of clothes, snacks, water and a phone charger for a long wait.
When should it be ready?
Every pregnancy is different, and your care team is the best guide on timing. Many families start packing slowly early in the third trimester, so the last weeks don't feel rushed.
A small tip
Tuck a short note or letter into the bag that you'd like to read to your baby after the birth. It might be the sweetest thing you pack.
